Hi,

"Grow where you are planted"! Sportsmen and women stand out because we see them expressing their gift. Our individual talents make us unique, not only because of what we have been 'given', but also because of what we have got to 'give'. Keeping our gifts 'hidden' or 'to ourselves' will result in us never reaching our full potential as athletes or as people. Choosing to share our abilities with others will not only bring greater self satisfaction and purpose but will also help others in their quest to be the best they can both in sport and life.

At Ignite we are about to embark on a new project encouraging those who have a passion for sport to use that passion to make a difference. In July we start out very first 'Make Sport Your Mission' Course. Our hope is that others will discover and find new joy, meaning and purpose in serving our sports communities and schools through sports volunteer opportunities. Our first course is 'full' and we look forward to seeing ordinary people embark on a six month journey to make a difference both on our sports fields and in our gymnasiums.

If you would like more information about 'Make Sport Your Mission' course or other Ignite Sport initiatives please feel free to contact me.

Introducing Steve and Caro Willis

Entertainment Book

We welcome back Steve Willis to the Ignite Sport team. Steve and his wife Caro have been involved with Ignite Sport since its inception in 2001. Both have been involved with sport all their lives. Steve has had a variety of roles both in schools and in the community. He currently coaches athletes and recently co-coached his brother Nick Willis to his recent Beijing Olympic 1500 bronze medal success. Ignite Sport is extremely fortunate to have involved a person of Steve's calibre and experience. His skills and community network connections will greatly assist Ignites work in the region.

Word from Steve

When I was working Director of Sport at Hutt Valley High School, one of the greatest challenges at the start of each season was engaging volunteers to coach, manage and support our sports teams. Around the country kids are missing out on sport as schools and clubs find it increasingly difficult to provide adequate support for their teams.

Coaches have a unique opportunity to not only impart skills and sporting knowledge, but also mentor and have a positive input into a young athlete's life at a time when they are making really important life choices. Ask someone to name a person who had a major impact on them while they were growing up, and many point to a particular coach they had. The benefits for young people of playing sport are needed in society now more than ever!

As a coach, I am becoming more aware that it is easy to just focus of the physiological aspects of an athlete and forget to prioritise issues of character, balance and identity. In my experience an athlete's talent or potential can only be fully recognized if there is a stable foundation from which to work from, capable of dealing with the pressures of life, enabling the athlete to make good life decisions on and off the field. We call this coaching 'inner fitness'.

My work at Ignite Sport is centered around establishing the Ignite Sport Network - a framework designed to connect sports-mad volunteers with the needs and opportunities that exists within our sporting communities, while at the same time, encouraging and supporting people to also see their sport as an area to have a positive impact on those around them.

Sports Camp A Real Winner

Masters

25 people (35+) represented Ignite Sport at this year's Masters Sports Camp in Matamata. Team Ignite (AKA 'Once Were Athletes') performed admirably both on and off the field taking out five finals and winning the prestigious 'Team Sportsmanship' award. Kevin Goldsbury from Ignite was the camps keynote speaker encouraging participants to use the 'power of sport' to make a difference in their communities.

Join the Team!

If you love playing a variety of sports and are interested in joining 'Team Ignite Sport' at either a Masters (May 2010), Elite (Jan 2010) or Youth level (Dec 2009), please contact Kevin Ph 04 9202204 or email kevin@ignitesport.org.nz.

BYM Easter Camp

Ignite Sport ran the sports competition at this year's camp in Fielding. Over 850 young people camped at Manfield Park and a good number of young people took part in the Touch Rugby, Soccer and Volleyball Competitions. The standard of play was high throughout the weekend with Lower Hutt, Petone, Rimutaka and Epuni Baptist youth groups performing well in the finals. It was a great privilege for Ignite to serve another organisation in this way.

WATCH THIS SPACE!

Ignite Sport is working on plans to open its very first 'Ignite Fitness Studio' to be located in Central Hutt. Plans are well under way for a brand new, fully functioning gym facility which will be both revolutionary and affordable. Quality trainers, friendly staff and a professional service will ensure that the 'Ignite experience' will enhance personal wellbeing and self awareness in exercise, health, lifestyle and balance.

Shortly, we will be sending out further information and an exclusive 'introductory membership offer' to those in our Ignite Sport Network. Membership will be limited to 150 and we fully expect memberships to be snapped up quickly. Apart from providing and operating a fantastic public fitness facility, membership fees will go towards supporting Ignite Sport initiatives in the community. The facility will also become a more than useful base for present and future Ignite Sport activities.
