NEWSLINK

Welcome to our second Ignite Sport E-Newslink.

I was recently talking to a coach who said it was easy to gear up his team to perform well on the field through coaching drills and skills, but the ability to support, assist and train athletes to effectively negotiate the challenges that life throws up was a whole new ball game. Young athletes today face a barrage of decisions, choices and challenges that will ultimately affect their performance both in sport and in life. Many find life's pressures distracting and often debilitating. Issues such as negative peer pressure, alcohol and/or drug use, broken relationships, or even the simple sheer 'cost' of sport, can all have negative consequences at an age when young people are making some of their most important decisions. As a result, many lose heart, direction and a desire to reach their full potential.

Understanding 'balance' is critical for the development of any young person, however the concept of 'balance' is all too often neglected in NZ sport. As coaches we must train effective drills and skills, but we must also train our athletes and all young people to also consider issues of character and heart, the very things that make up their 'core' both as athletes and as people. This is where Ignite Sport can play a unique part by assisting our young people to think about all areas of life that work against them achieving their optimum performance, both on and off the field.

Thank you for another opportunity to let your know what Ignite Sport is up to. Please feel free to forward this E-Newslink to anyone you think may be interested in connecting with us and they too will have opportunity to subscribe.
