Athletics

  • Ignite Sport sent a team to Fiji from the 20th April - the 1st May to run athletics coaching clinics in high schools in the lead-up to the Coca Cola Games. The Coca Cola Games is Fiji's only annual secondary schools athletics competition and is described as the biggest secondary schools meet in the South Pacific, attracting over 3000 participants from 120 secondary schools across Fiji.   • NZ Hurdler Becky Wardell who attended Ignite Academy in 2002 and 2003 is in Athens yet she will not line up to race alongside her training partner, World Champion hurdler Jana Pittman, she will instead be helping Jana in her Olympic dream. Basketball

  • Ignite Basketball coach for 2004 Dave Mackay has just been appointed the assistant coach of the NZ Secondary Schools Boys Basketball team. Being part of basketball at Ignite this year is a chance to for you to work with and learn from one of the best junior coaches in NZ!

Cross Country

  • Two six month memberships at Lifestyle Health and Fitness Clubs including a scholarship to the 'Need for Speed' training course are up for grabs at the Ignite Sports Academy 2005. The awards will be made to one female and one male athlete that impress coaches with their attitude and performance on and off the field. A big thank you to Lifestyle Health and Fitness Clubs for these awards and the amazing opportunity it presents for two young Academy athletes.
  • Athletes who attended the first Ignite Cross Country module at last years Wellington Academy performed well at the National Secondary School Cross Country Championships held in Dunedin on 19 June.

Hockey

  • Black Stick midfielder Shea McAleese attended the 2005 Ignite Sports Academy and offering his knowledge and skills to the young Hockey players. Shea debuted for New Zealand in the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia in May 2005. At 20, the promising Cantabrian who plays in the National Hockey league for Canterbury looks to have a solid career ahead of him.
  • New Zealand Black Stick Niniwa Roberts-Lang has confirmed she will be working with the hockey module at the Wellington Ignite Sports Academy 2004. Niniwa will be coming to the Academy after the Blacksticks Champions Trophy campaign in Argentina in November. This caps off a fantastic year which has also seen her star as one of the top NZ players at the Athens Olympics.

Netball

  • Canterbury Flames and NZ 'A' Netball coach Marg Foster was back to coach at her 4th Ignite Sports Academy in 2004. Marg challenged the young netball players on and off the court and provided valuable unforgetable wisdom and insight throughout her training sessions.
  • The 2004 Ignite Academy again had the experience of World Champion Silver Fern Vilimaina Davu.

Rugby

  • 2005 Chiefs Super 12 midfield back and former All Black Mark Ranby attended the 2005 Ignite Sports Academy sharing his knowledge and expereince of elite level sport. Ranby was named last week in the Chiefs squad for the upcoming Super 14 season.
  • Former All Black and Chiefs Super 12 player Mark Ranby will be at the Wellington Ignite Sports Academy 2004 to work alongside the rugby players and to share his experiences of top level rugby and how he deals with the ups and the downs of professional sport.
  • Michael Pehi has been having a great season playing this year for the premier Hutt Old Boys team. He also recently played three games for the Wellington 15's side against Wairarapa, Wanganui, and Hawkes Bay.

Touch Rugby

  • The Touch module was action packed at the 2005 academy, with NZ Player George Albert-Jahnke, NZ Open Womens Coach Grant Edmonds, Wellington coach and player Manu Cribb and NZ U21 player Chad Evans combining to bring awesome coaching and experience to the young touch players!
  • Touch NZ was part of Ignite Sport in 2005 sending coaches and top players along to work with the young Ignite Touch players over the 4 days of the Ignite Academy.
  • Ignite Sport Summer Touch is on! The first game is Friday October 22nd at Petone Rec so join up to be part of the exciting and very competitive Ignite Men's team or the Mixed team that is just a wee bit more relaxed!   • Chad Evans has been selected for the New Zealand Under 21 Touch side to compete at the Touch Youth World Cup in Brisbane in 2005.
