Ignite Sport Trust took out the Supreme Award last night at at the 2013 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards in association with Wellington Community Trust.

Ignite Sport Trust is a youth development organisation that operates throughout the Wellington Region, using sport and recreation to engage, connect and change lives.

75 volunteers support a core team in delivering innovative programmes in low decile schools and the community that not only teach sport disciplines, but also good decision-making, communication, leadership, nutrition and general life-skills.

Ignite Sport also organise volunteer sports mentors, coaches and administrators from the community to fill gaps in school sports programmes. They will now go on to represent Wellington in the 2014 TrustPower National Awards.

“The Community Awards celebrate and support the volunteers who provide a vital service to our region’s communities. We were really impressed with Ignite Sport Trust’s volunteers commitment and contribution to their cause," said Steve Sanderson, Chief Executive of Wellington Airport.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the awards. To celebrate this milestone, Wellington Airport gave Community Award Supreme winners from the past decade the chance to win a share of $10,000.

The winner of the competition was Wellington Airport’s 2004 Supreme Award winner Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ who won $2,800.

“It was great to see the very first winner of the Supreme Award win the tenth anniversary competition. 90,000 students have participated in Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ Festival over the past 22 years, it is very rewarding to think that Wellington Airport has helped in contributing to their success, ”said Steve Sanderson.
