The purpose of our trip to Fiji is to provide opportunity for our senior school players to experience life in another culture and to make a difference in the lives of others. In their own words the boys described it as Inspiring the people of Fiji. To achieve this, the team will spend several days visiting and running coaching clinics in a number of Fijian schools and communities, and assisting Fiji cricket through exposing the game to young people. We will also leave bags of donated cricket gear at each school we visit. It is this 'service' aspect of the trip that has most captured and excited the school community, the players and their parents.
While in Fiji we will also be playing several one day games, including three matches against the Fijian National Squad before they head off to their ICC World Cup qualifying tournament in Tanzania. It will be a great privilege to play the Fijian National Squad and this in itself will generate interest in both New Zealand and Fiji. We will also play games against Latoka, Suva and Western Fiji Representative sides.
Thank you to all those who attended our fundrasing breakfast. Over 200 people enjoyed sitting down to a fully cooked breakfast and hearing Wellington Crickets CEO, and former NZ Black Cap Gavin Larsen discuss issues of character, leadership and motivation with BJ Crook (current Firebird and ex HVHS 1st XI) and Matthew Bell (curret Firebirds Capt and former NZ Black Cap). Gavin also interviewed current Hutt High players who will be traveling to Fiji. A surprise guest at the breakfast was Steve Willis who recently returned from Beijing after a coaching stint with succesful Bronse Medalist and brother Nick Willis. Steve donated a NZ Athletics Tee Shirt signed by members of NZ Athletics team. This along with a cricket bat donated by NZ Cricket and signed by the NZ Black Caps, were autioned off to raise funds for the Fiji trip.
