Ignite Sport

Ignite Sport looks for ways to support all young people in our community especially people who may have less opportunities than others. We regularly assist at community events such as Athletes with a Disability Athletics days, Tri-ability events, we run an annual day for the Thumbs Up programme, and more recently have provided sports and recreation activities for students who attend the Naenae College Special Needs Unit.

If you are a Principal, HOD or Teacher who is interested in having a programme run in your school for students with a disability, or you are working with people with a disability and would like us to come and support or run an event with your group, please contact us for more information.

What people had to say about these programmes

We at Thumbs Up are very lucky to work alongside the team at Ignite Sport and have formed this relationship over a five year period.

What is great is how well our team of young people easily relate with Ignite Sport staff; they really do connect with our young people.

Some of the activities we come together is at Soccer at Hutt Rec and TriAbility but our major connection is the day at Brookfield each year where we have a full on day of physical activities building their confidence, skills and pushing boundaries for everyone involved.   It’s such a great day with lots of fun and laughter.  I have noticed over the years how we all keep growing and empowering our people to do more and giving them choice.

My mission is to keep this connection with Ignite Sport’s team, it is one of our major success stories here at Thumbs Up.

Sports and Recreation Coordinator, Thumbs Up

The biggest buzz has been watching those students who normally opt out of exercise, enjoying the fun, physical challenges that Ignite Sport offers. The programme has been so positive, all-inclusive and tailored to the diverse range of abilities and needs of our students. We have all made new, cool friends who have become immersed in our Te Whanau Tahi community and we can't wait to continue our journey! Arohanui 'IS' Team!
