Ignite Sport

Year 7 & Year 8 Intermediate Programme

The Intermediate programme shares the message that 'before you are a leader, it is about growing yourself and when you become a leader it is about growing others’. Our programme aims to help students enhance their character, to connect with their peers and to become encouraging leaders both in and outside of school. The programme encourages inclusivity, teamwork and recreation while teaching life skills that enable students to take on life and to be better equipped to make positive choices.

Life skills components include: identifying gifts/talents, self-worth, building confidence and resilience, supporting others, setting goals, identity – who I am, values, effective communication, and an introduction to leadership and different styles.

An investment into early years is critical if students are to get the very best start in life and ultimately reach their full potential in later years. This is why we deliver the Intermediate programmes.

What people had to say about our Intermediate Programme

I found it an educational experience. It built my confidence in talking to people and building new friendships. It has made me step up and take on leadership roles in my class.

My communication skills and confidence are the two main things that have improved for me. I used to be shy about talking in front of others but would now like to be a student councillor next year because I feel more confident in myself. Ignite has taught me a lot about key values in life, about how important health and healthy eating are and about leadership. I enjoyed it a lot.

I loved the lessons and the presentations and I liked the key words. I would love to do Ignite again because the people are nice and they like to include everyone in all the activities. I want to say a big thank you to the Ignite Team for all the things they taught me. I found it very useful and would recommend the programme to others. Student.

It is almost three years since our association with Ignite Sports began and in this time, over 200 students have participated in the programme.

We have just completed our half yearly review of this year’s programme and once again, I am really impressed with what the students have said about the programme and what they have learnt in the 9-10 weeks working with the mentors from Ignite Sports Academy.

Both groups were asked the same questions about the programme and from their responses, it was evident that both groups had not only enjoyed being involved in the programme but also learnt a lot from their ‘awesome’ mentors, with one boy saying ‘it blew me away how awesome they are’. Positive role models are not a given for a lot of my students, especially for the boys, so this was a great comment to read. Pearl Murti, Principal Wainuiomata Intermediate.
